To put it lightly, the Blue Jays number two pitcher has been playing like … well, number two.
The Kansas City Royals scored 6 runs off of David Purcey last night, which elevates his ERA to 7.01. Prior to his April 22nd start against the Texas Rangers, I thought to myself; “if Purcey has another bad start, the Jays should send him down to Triple A”. Now it seems like he was only delaying the inevitable - but for the time being, David Purcey will stay right where he is.
If the Jays weren’t so desperate for arms, I’m sure Purcey would have been on the first flight out of Toronto this morning. But now the pitching staff is so depleted that David Purcey is really the only viable option for the starting rotation. Until Casey Janssen gets better, or someone like Brett Cecil or Brad Mills can come in to save the day, we’re at the mercy of David Purcey.
