One Really Really Bad Inning

Out of all the 17 starts Ricky Romero made in the first half of the season, this was definitely the one he would love to have back.

In fact, you can go as far as to say Romero would just love to have the third inning back of the Blue Jays 11-3 loss to the New York Yankees.

It was like the inning from hell: just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse … it did. Brett Gardner blows it wide open with a grand slam and the Yankees move ahead 8-2.

Then after Romero gets yanked from the game, Brian Tallet gives up double to Alex Rodriguez which scores three more runs.

The worst part of it all? Seven of those 11 runs scored in the third inning were with two out. If Romero makes a great pitch to Brett Gardner on a 2-2 count, the Jays move on to the fourth inning trailing 4-2 as opposed to 11-2.

Unfortunately, that’s just the way the game unfolds sometimes … and the Blue Jays just happened to be on the losing end of things.

The great thing about baseball is that there is almost always another game the very next day, and another chance for redemption. Another win for the Blue Jays against the Yankees on Sunday and today’s debacle is all but forgotten, except inside of the mind of Ricky Romero.

Join me on Sunday afternoon as I’ll be liveblogging the rubber match of the series over at The Score starting at 1:00pm.

The fact that the words "rubber match" can even appear in the same sentence as "Jays vs. Yankees" this year is beyond most people's expectations, so I'm still stoked.

Exactly! 1 out of 3 is still an accomplishment against the best team in baseball, but 2 out of 3 would be REALLY nice.
