Fear The Beard

Just when you thought Jose Bautista’s monstrous season couldn’t get any bigger, it did.

He proceeded to drop a couple of bombs on the good folks in Minneapolis within the confines of the ballpark that has given up the third least amount of long balls, nonetheless.

According to HitTracker, the longest home run hit out of Target Field this season was a towering 448 foot shot by Brennan Boesch on May 4th. They don’t have Jose Bautista’s home runs from last night posted yet, but I’m sure that grand slam to the third deck will rival Boesch’s for the longest hit at Target Field.

Perhaps more telling than the distance than the distance of the home run itself was the reaction of the fans who were sitting in the vicinity of where Bautista’s home run ball landed. They look completely dumbfounded that any human being could possibly have the brute strength to send a baseball into the Home Run Porch View seats.

Bautista followed up that bomb with his first opposite field home run of the season. Just in case his biggest skeptics though he might be a one-trick pony that could only pull home runs to left field, Jose Bautista shows some versatility and launches one into the right field flower beds.

Having seen Jose Bautista hit 53 home runs out of the park (and one inside the park), I think we’ve gotten accustomed to how incredible it is to watch him go about his business. But then there are times like last night where he amazes us all over again by clobbering one to left field and then sending one to right field.

If opposing pitchers weren’t scared before, now they are. Fear the beard.

I think I watched that grand slam home run at least 5 times. Bless the PVR. The best was the sound, not of the ball off the bat, even though that was awesome, but of the "OHHHHH!!!1" from the shocked crowd. He absolutely smoked that ball.

Anon, I actually had someone email me last night suggesting I do a "Fear the Beard" T-Shirt, thus the title of this post. I'll definitely be working on a design in the next few weeks.

Navin, I can't remember off the top of my head, but Pat Tabler also was speechless on that one. I think he said "oh my" … and then there was a pause of 2-3 seconds. I'm still getting over "gangstered".

A better one to compare it to is the one that Corey Hart hit (440) because it went into the same stands. Boesch's went into RF so it's a little harder to compare visually.

Anon, good point – I didn't see the path, so I couldn't tell whether it was hit to left or right. Hopefully they post the distance of Bautista's home run on the site soon.
