Could These Be the New Blue Jays Uniforms?

The holidays may just be just over 6 short weeks away, but as far as Toronto Blue Jays fans are concerned, Christmas arrives on November 18th.

It’s officially the worst kept secret in Blue Jays land, but the team is rumoured to be revealing their brand new uniforms and logo next Friday at 12:00pm with a formal on-field announcement.

Invitations went out to the media earlier this week, and Mike Cormack of Sportsnet hinted that the font used on the invitation may in itself be a clue as to what we can expect from the new uniforms.

Personally, I’m dying to see the new uniform and logos and can’t wait to see the unveiling. And since I’m so damn impatient, I decided to do a mock up of what could be the new Blue Jays font along with the leaked logo.

Dark Blue Uniforms

Design A: Home Uniform

Design B: Alternate Uniform

Medium Blue Uniforms

Design C: Home Uniform

Design D: Alternate Uniform

Again, this is a total shot in the dark on my part and it was just me Photoshopping what I think the final products could turn out like. I did two different colour schemes, one for each shade of blue in the leaked logo.

Originally, I was leaning more towards the medium blue uniforms, but now I’m starting to warm up to the navy blue coloured versions. It’s not the typical “blue” in the traditional sense, but I think the navy blue looks much better than its counterpart.

However, I would give the edge to the medium blue home jerseys because that colour of font tends to stand out more against the white than the dark blue. It could just be that I’ve been staring at these things for hours, but the navy begins to look like black after a while.

Even if the colours and the designs are nowhere close to what is finally revealed next Friday, I hope the Blue Jays do end up using that font that was on the invitation and on the above illustrations.

Just like the leaked logo itself, there’s an old-time feel to it with a modern twist to it, and would compliment that revamped Blue Jays logo extremely well.

My favourite Blue Jays jersey of all time was their 1994-1996 alternate uniforms, and going the dark blue route for the new uniforms (even if it’s only for the third alternate jersey) would surely make a lot of Blue Jays fans very happy.

Let me know what you think I’m completely out to lunch with these designs, or if they just might be close to what we’ll eventually see next Friday at 12:00pm noon. Feel free to vote on your favourites in the poll below.

Update: Thanks to @LaconicDesign for offering up this much more attractive design of the possible new home uniforms.

Which Design Could Be the Next Blue Jays Uniform?

Ian Hunter

Ian has been writing about the Toronto Blue Jays since 2007. He enjoyed the tail-end of the Roy Halladay era and vividly remembers the Alex Rodriguez "mine" incident. He'll also retell the story of Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS to his kids for the next 20 years.

I'm not so sure about the whole retro styling I feel that they missed that bandwagon by a year or so.I never really liked the angry jays head logo, but now with its aparent demise I think I will miss it.

Ace, at first I was cool with the angry bird logo, but after 7 years it's beginning to look very dated. I do however enjoy the "T" logo alternates.

Going the retro route is a lot safer I think because it has a longer shelf life. They could have just reverted back to the old logo, but a tweak to that logo with a new font will be a fresh start, while still appealing to the folks who are fans of the old Blue Jays uniforms.

I might be proven wrong in about a week, but I don't think that the font used in the invitation would be the one to appear on the uniforms. To me, that typeface looks like something meant for print rather than a design to go on a jersey.

Dropping the baseball makes the new/old logo look less cluttered than the original, which I like.

    The Navy blue is nice.

What I do not like, *at all*, is the font. The serifs look goofy and overall the letters look disproportionately fat (the characters are the right width but the strokes seem too wide).

Minor Leaguer, I didn't think so at first either, but somebody hinted on Twitter that this font is associated with the new uniforms somehow.

Jeff, it looks a lot cleaner without the baseball, doesn't it? Not to mention, apparently there's some silly rule that logos can't include the likeness of a baseball in them or something like that.

I'm betting the letters will be bi-sected, like they used to be.

What happened to that lumberjack uni we saw from the Toronto Star last year? I sooooo wanted to vote for that as the alternate uni!

They should just bring back the original tried-and-true-BLUE designs! This rumoured new logo is just a somewhat-reasonable facsimile of the original logo. Why not go for the REAL THING?

Ian (of Blue Jay Hunter) has said his all-time fave Blue Jays uniform is the 1994-96 alternate. I agree, so lets bring those back, unadulterated!

Allisauce, interesting – I wonder what this font would look like bisected, that might be a project for next week!

Coolhead, that lumberjack design was pretty badass. And it definitely upped the Canadian Content the Blue Jays were looking for! Maybe they'll bust out the lumberjack uni's for Canada Day.

Driveof85, nothing beats that 94-96 alternate uniform. Always has been my favourite, always will be. It just screams classic Blue Jays. The easy thing would be to revert completely back to those uniforms, but I think a slight variation of the old logos will be an homage to the glory day Jays, while giving a contemporary update.

CoolHead, I found the long lost Lumberjack uni here! Pretty sassy. The denim pants might be a little objectionable for practicality's sake, but the yellow belt is a must.

But I'm definitely crossing my fingers for something like what DriveOf85 posted, the 94-94 alternate. Blue shirt, some clean text, and in my opinion, you gotta have a logo on there somewhere!

If they made the 94-96 shirt plaid, I wouldn't be complaining, either.

The current logo was a mistake from the beginning, dreamed up by consultants to give the team an edgy youthful look. Instead it got old and boring in a hurry. The "blue" in Blue Jays disappeared. The leaked logo, so similar to the original looks fine to me.

I was there in 1977 but I never liked the split fonts. The Jays got it right around 1989 when the bird on the uniform was made smaller and put to one side. The Roger Clemens era redesign was a mistake, especially those blue with red letter uniforms. (the dark days of Fregosi/Martinez/Tosca).

Elise, a positive side affect of the lumberjack uniforms is they can be worn during those chilly games early in the season.

Ron, I prefer to think that T-Bird/Red Logo era didn't happen. Thankfully it was short lived, but those were not very sharp looking uniforms back in the late 90's/early 2000's.
